Fear

At church last Saturday, the priest asked what we feared. I fear snakes. It's probably an irrational fear but I know I am not alone and many others are as afraid of them as I am. I'm not sure why they give me the shivers because I know that they are good for keeping vermin down but they still seem to me to be slimey, slithery creatures. I must have inherited the fear from my dad.

At one time, I was deathly afraid of guns. I eventually overcame that fear by taking a gun safety class and learning how to handle and shoot a gun. I even bought a handgun that has only been used one time at a shooting range. This was how I beat out that fear and maybe that is how all fears should be dealt with.

I hate snakes and most reptiles. I know they have a place here but I will never conquer my fear of this slimy creature. Most of my nightmares as a young child were about snakes go figure...

QD, you're from AZ. If you have picked up horny toads, then you're half-way there. You should start with a pretty green garden snake -- a little one. You'll find that they're not slimy at all, but dry and very smooth if you run your hands down them from the mouth end toward the tail. Maybe you might find the right kind at a petting zoo, where they'd help you.
